Me reedito.Como La Amanda Abbigton no tiene post os dejo aquí una entrevista de hoy en el The Scotsman ,en la que habla de su participación en la tercera parte de la serie:
Sherlock star Amanda Abbington on the new series

AFTER years of rejection Amanda Abbington is set to become a Sunday night sensation. But the best part is being romantically reunited with her globe-trotting husband.

‘PEOPLE are going to hate me.” Amanda Abbington does a neat line in self-deprecating humour. The reason for her prediction is that, soon, Abbington’s rather lovely face will be hard to miss on a Sunday night.

While not exactly taking over the schedules, the actress will be appearing in two of the most eagerly awaited programmes of the next few months. On STV she’ll be back behind the counter as the formidable and lovelorn Miss Mardle, head of accessories, in the new series of Mr Selfridge, and on the Beeb she’ll be in the hysteria-inducing third series of Sherlock. It is just possible (she doesn’t know and neither do we, since transmission dates have yet to be confirmed) that both programmes could be on at the same time, which would put Abbington head to head with herself. Nice work.

But even if that were to happen, when someone in a business known for its feast or famine ways gets this lucky, surely it would be more than a little churlish to be resentful? After all, Abbington is all too familiar with the other side of the story.

“When I first met Martin, I stopped working for 18 months. I didn’t do anything. Not a thing,” says Abbington, referring to her partner of 12 years, actor Martin Freeman, with whom she has two children, Joe, seven, and Grace, five.

They met on the set of the TV movie Men Only before The Office turned Freeman into a star. So was she looking for a career break?

“No,” she smiles, “it just stopped. I’d done a nice costume drama, I met Martin, and that was it for 18 months.” She raises her eyebrows and shrugs. “But I kept going.”

Abbington describes herself as “quite scrappy”, and I suppose you’d have to be to keep plugging away in the face of that kind of rejection. It also helps that right from the start, as a little girl growing up, Abbington knew she wanted to be an actor, insisting on putting on variety shows for her parents complete with makeshift curtain and hand-drawn tickets.

“It’s the love of doing it,” says the 39-year-old. “Being an actor has got to be vocational. There was no way that I was going to give up, that I was going to let it beat me,” she says. “It is quite demoralising, but you can’t take it personally, because it’s not personal.”

But surely that’s exactly the problem. You don’t get the job because something about you (not necessarily something you can do anything about) doesn’t quite fit. It doesn’t get much more personal than that. Abbington smiles: “I was watching The X Factor the other day and I was thinking, you have no idea of rejection. This is the first thing you’ve done. You’ve wanted it all your life? Yeah, all your 16 years. Be an actor. Be an actor for about two years and see how that goes, because it’s constant. The number of jobs that you get as a ratio to the number of times you are rejected is incredible.”

It turns out that I’ve met Abbington before. It was more than a year ago, in a car park in South Queensferry on a freezing-cold day. I spent the afternoon watching her sitting in a car having the same conversation with a man over and over again as I listened in on headphones. It sounds odd, but that’s what happens on a TV set – in this instance the set of the BBC drama Case Histories, in which Abbington played DC Louise Munroe, a dour Edinburgh cop in a love/hate relationship with private eye Jackson Brodie (Jason Isaacs).

“I was wearing such a thin leather jacket,” she says, remembering the biting wind. “Munroe was supposed to be Scottish, but there’s no way if she was she’d have been wearing a coat like that. She’d have been wrapped up.”

She has a point. I don’t remember her coat, as it happens. I remember the one I was given: an enormous North Face suitable for Arctic expeditions which I put on over all of my other clothes and which still didn’t keep out the cold. I also remember Abbington’s impressive Edinburgh accent that disappeared between takes like warm breath in the cold air. “I apologise for the accent,” she says, before I can offer a compliment. “It’s hard. It’s quite posh.”

So how does someone so chronically modest cope with her latest run of work, with a recurring part in a successful drama and a plum role in one of the most adored and celebrated telly offerings of recent years, Sherlock? Because, let’s face it, both Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Hollywood careers may be soaring, but no roles have provoked as much excitement and devotion as their revamped versions of the inhabitants of 221B Baker Street.

“You just cling on to it,” Abbington says. “You desperately make it work.”

As for explaining her success, she just shrugs. “It’s coincidental,” she says. “I didn’t get any of these on the back of the others.” In fact, Abbington auditioned for the parts in both Case Histories and Mr Selfridge. With Sherlock, though, it was slightly different. Writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat wrote the part of Mary Morstan, Watson’s love interest, specifically for Abbington. If there was ever something to get a little puffed up about, this might be it, but not Abbington.

“We were at Mark Gatiss’s house when The Hounds Of Baskerville first came on the telly. Afterwards they went into the kitchen and were sitting talking about the next series. I went in and sat with them. It had been mooted that I would be in it, might have a little part in it. They were talking about who might play Mary and I was like, ‘So, who are you thinking of?’ and they said ‘You’.”

It seems like a sensible choice. After all, who else could be better to play John Watson’s future wife (to be clear, Abbington offers no spoilers, but pictures of her wearing a wedding dress have somewhat let the cat out of the bag) than the real-life partner of the man who plays him?

“I got very emotional because it just seemed so amazing, just such a gift,” she says.

Abbington admits that, even for her, stepping into a show that has such a reputation and that centres so much on the dramatic rapport between the two leads was daunting.

“I remember doing a scene very early on with Martin and Ben, and I was standing in between them and I thought ‘I really have to up my game, this is proper’. They really bounce off each other.

“When I was at the read-through, I remember watching them, and the chemistry between them is just amazing. They do have this beautiful relationship, so getting in between that – which is what Mary does, she becomes this kind of third wheel – was scary. Also, the fans love these two together, so I’m sure Mary won’t be particularly liked by them, but I hope that on the whole people really like her, because she’s a great character and she has some fantastic secrets.”

There was a bit of a storm in an online teacup about Mary’s appearance in Baker Street. Abbington was on the receiving end of some pretty nasty comments from young fans who couldn’t quite cope with Sherlock and Watson’s twosome becoming a threesome. Such was the vitriol, a rival site was set up championing Abbington’s cause. Fans sent in pictures of themselves holding up “We HEART Amanda Abbington” signs.

For Abbington, the chance to work with Freeman seems to have been the best part of the job. It’s not uncommon, of course, for actors to be married to each other – James McAvoy and Anne-Marie Duff, Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz – but I’ve never come across one who is so openly admiring of their partner’s talent without sounding in the least bit soppy, or jealous.

“He’s one of my favourite actors,” she says. “I’m biased but it’s true. Watching him work is brilliant – every take he does something different. He’s a really good actor and he’s a really good person to have on set because he makes everyone feel relaxed. I learned a lot from Martin.”

As for being in a relationship with someone who does the same job, Abbington says it works so well because both understand the long hours and the need to be away from home for long periods of time. It’s just as well really, because for his role as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s epic prequel to his Lord Of The Rings trilogy, The Hobbit, Freeman had to be away from home for 18 months. Blimey.

“It was hard,” she says, “the hardest thing we’ve ever had to do. The longest I didn’t see him for was four months because I was doing Mr Selfridge and he went out to New Zealand to do the last block of The Hobbit.”

The time difference made it even worse. “You’re never in sync, ever. When you’re up and ready to go, he’s getting ready for bed, so you miss each other. I don’t recommend it and we’d never do that again. We’d never do that long apart again.”

In fact, Abbington admits the enforced separation was something of a wake-up call.

“It was a real lesson in being together, in making sure that that part of our relationship is strong,” she says. “We need to spend quality time together. It took him doing The Hobbit for us to realise that, because we had taken it for granted for a while. You get complacent, but it was like, oh we do still want to be together, we do love each other and this is hard.” She smiles. “It was a bit of a revelation. And it was close.”

When Mr Selfridge finishes shooting, Abbington will get a break and, although she wants the work to continue, she’s looking forward to going home and “just being a mum for a while”.

“This is a great period in the run-up to Christmas. We’ve got Halloween then Guy Fawkes Night, then it’s my son’s birthday and then it’s Christmas, so it’s really nice to be at home for all of that.” Having children has, she says, changed her priorities when it comes to her career, but that doesn’t mean she’s not ambitious.

“Your priorities change. Before I had children, acting was the most important thing in the world to me. If I couldn’t be a really successful actress then it was awful. But as soon as children come along it’s like, ‘Right, this is my role.’ It shifts the balance of things.”

She pauses. “But after four or five weeks you do think, ‘Right, I’m ready to do something again. I want to exercise my acting muscle.’” n

• Sherlock will air soon on BBC1 and Mr Selfridge on STV

Spoiler:

I solved the case of The Reichenbach Fall on February 10, 2013 from my home in Berkeley, California, two days after first viewing the final episode of Series Two.  I did not publish it at the time so as not to spoil it for first time viewers of the episode.  Since Season Three will debut soon, I’m publishing it now!

(please add #shelock to your tweets on this solution)

SPOILER ALERT!

DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE SOLUTION!!!!

The Reichenbach Solution
by Amy Luna Manderino

The entire final episode of Season Two was one huge bait and switch.  Everyone is trying to solve how Sherlock faked his suicide.  But that’s not the real mystery to solve.  The great mystery is how Sherlock killed Moriarty.

That’s right.  Sherlock killed Moriarty.

Impossible, you say?  After all, didn’t we all watch Moriarty put the gun in his mouth and pull the trigger?  Yes.  But it was Sherlock who made him do it.

He did this with the power of suggestion.  Sherlock convinced Moriarty that he (Sherlock) had poisoned both Moriarty’s cup of tea and Sherlock’s own cup of tea with a radioactive substance that slowly kills its victim when Moriarty came to Sherlock’s flat and sipped on a “cuppa.”

This murder weapon is straight from the front pages of England’s tabloids—Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko was murdered slowly and painfully when his cup of tea was poisoned with Polonium 210 in a London sushi restaurant in Piccadilly in 2006.

This is Sherlock’s grand opus.  He plays Moriarty like a violin.  Sherlock is in control of everything right up until the final note because he planned it. Sherlock knew Moriarty was too smart to be vulnerable to any external attack.  He had to convince Moriarty to want to kill himself.  After all, as he told DI Lestrade,

”You can’t kill an idea, can you? Not once it’s made a home…THERE.”

Sherlock convinced Moriarty that he had poisoned both of them by having Molly inject his eyes with GFP - Green Florescent Protein - to make them appear to glow.  He showed Moriarty his glowing eyes on the rooftop, making Moriarty believe that Sherlock had committed suicide/murder.  Subsequently, Moriarty shot and killed himself.

Sherlock got the idea in The Hounds of Baskerville episode when he saw the scientist’s formula for making specific types of cells glow (such as rabbit fur) that was written on her lab table.

Martin Chalfie, Osamu Shimomura, and Roger Y. Tsien were awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery and development of the Green Fluorescent Protein, but this lab’s research is top secret, so Sherlock knew that Moriarty (who stays abreast of all the latest scientific developments) would have no knowledge of the latest GFP applications—although Sherlock’s brother Mycroft knew and was in on the plot the entire time.

In the same scene in the lab, the viewer is also treated to this shot of Sherlock’s glowing eyes looking into the lab microscope…foreshadowing, anyone?

and, to taunt the viewer further, the final episode opens with not one, but three shots of toppled teacups…alluding to the, ahem, “murder” weapon, a cup of tea.

How very Brit.

On the rooftop, Sherlock is careful to avert his eyes from Moriarty’s gaze.

He cannot reveal his hand (eyes?) until he has the names of Sherlock’s friends that Moriarty has targeted for death so Sherlock knows who to save after Sherlock fakes his own suicide.  Once he has the names, he conducts his perfectly composed cunning masterpiece in this exchange with Moriarty on the rooftop:

Moriarty: “Sherlock, your big brother and all the King’s horses couldn’t make me do something I didn’t want to.”

Of course.  Sherlock knows that.  That’s why Sherlock had to make Moriarty want to kill himself…by convincing Moriarty that both of them were already dying from radiation poisoning.

Sherlock: “Yes, but I’m not my brother, remember? I am you. Prepared to do anything. Prepared to burn.  Prepared to do what ordinary people won’t do.”

Commit murder/suicide to win.  Remember that Moriarty threatened to “burn” Sherlock at the end of Season One.  Sherlock knew what he meant and had to get there first.  Or at least appear to.

Sherlock: ”You want me to shake hands with you in hell?  I shall not disappoint you.”

Moriarty: ”…Nah…you’re ordinary…you’re on the side of the angels.”

Sherlock: ”I may be on the side of the angels, but don’t think for one second that I am one of them.”

The sun bursts through the clouds (suspension of disbelief required…this is England, after all) and the “moment of truth” comes for Moriarty here…

When the sun hits Sherlock’s eyes, Moriarty sees that Sherlock’s eyes are glowing, which he interprets as a symptom of radiation poisoning.

Moriarty: “I see.  You’re not ordinary. No. You’re me.”

Meaning…EVIL.

Moriarty: “Thank you, Sherlock. Thank you.”

Moriarty kills himself, believing he has won.  Because evil has won.  Sherlock has had to become evil to win.  Moriarty thanks Sherlock for finally outsmarting him, for not being “ordinary,” thereby alleviating Moriarty of the unbearable boredom of always being smarter and more ruthless than anyone else.  Staying alive…it’s so boring, isn’t it?

Only Moriarty hasn’t won because…Sherlock is brilliant!  He’s won AND he’s stayed on the side of the angels!!  Sherlock humbly allowed Moriarty to die believing that Sherlock had turned evil, ironically proving that Sherlock is a good guy, after all.  Sherlock knew Moriarty would keep killing to challenge Sherlock. Sherlock did what he had to do to stop him.  He sacrificed himself and his reputation to save others.  Just like Christ.

The apple imagery in the episode is not a reference to Grimm’s Fairy Tales, but to the biblical story of Adam and Eve and the fruit of the tree of knowledge and the cosmic battle of good vs. evil.

Moriarty is Lucifer, the fallen angel, cast out of paradise. Hence the imagery of the dark angel.

The Suicide

The bus is a fake bus.  It’s clearly not in service.  You can tell this when the man with a cane taps on the back door and it doesn’t open (which you can see in this screen shot).

I believe the roof of the bus is a trampoline. Sherlock bounces off the bus and lands on the pavement, thereby only falling 10 feet or so.  His homeless helpers surround him and smear blood on his face.  The rubber ball Sherlock has been playing with is what he used to stop his pulse so that Watson believes he’s dead.  Sherlock did this by squeezing the ball in his armpit (a well known magician’s trick). The sniper didn’t see Sherlock bounce off the trampoline because his scope was on Watson the whole time.  You can see Sherlock scanning the area for the sniper’s location to make sure the scope is on Watson before Sherlock jumps.

The Clue “Everyone Missed”

Sherlock creator Mark Gatiss has been quoted as saying:

“I’ve been online and looked at all the theories and there’s one clue that everyone’s missed. It’s something that Sherlock did that was very out of character, but which nobody has picked up on.”

The clue he’s referring to is when Sherlock appears to cry while talking to Watson on his cellphone before he jumps off the roof.  He isn’t crying.  His eyes are irritated from the injection of GFP.  It’s very out of character because Sherlock is a functioning sociopath and doesn’t cry.

My Own Two Cents

While I adore this series and find it brilliant, for what it’s worth, I think the series has missed two vitally important updates to a modern day Sherlock. Hopefully, I have enough street cred at this point for you to take note, dear reader.

1. Neurocardiology, Heart Rate Variability and EQ

Ample recent scientific research has revealed both an actual brain located in the organ of the heart and a vast subconscious intelligence that communicates through emotion and intuition. It’s hardly a novel concept. Gene Roddenberry gave a nod to the discovery and importance of EQ (emotional intelligence) over a quarter of a century ago with the creation of the Star Trek character Ship’s Counselor Deanna Troi.

A modern day Sherlock would be aware of this research. He would no longer believe that a sociopath makes the best detective because their “reason” is not clouded by “emotions” as we now know that “emotions” are a form of “intuition” and are how our vast and uber-powerful subconscious brain communicates to our relatively minuscule functioning conscious brain with lightening speed and accuracy. Sociopaths do not have the limbic skills to pick up on social cues and emotions, in others or themselves, thereby missing out on this important brain function.

We now know that “emotions” do not cloud “reason.”  Hypervigilant nervous systems do.  Regulated emotions and developed intuition can actually trump “reason,” a phenomenon well documented by Malcolm Gladwell in his best-selling book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking.

Heart intelligence can be developed by learning to regulate one’s Heart Rate Variability, which balances the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, which can otherwise remain out of balance from an over-active and stressed out neo-cortical “conscious” thinking brain. In other words, we can actually “reason” ourselves into stupidity by the hypervigilance of a chronically aroused automatic nervous system, and we often do.

The solution to this case actually came to me during my daily breathing meditation to develop control of my Heart Rate Variability with a biofeedback device called the emWave (this is Northern California, after all).  I was not even actively trying to solve the episode.  My subconscious solved it for me through the intelligence of the heart brain and it literally popped into my head that something important was going on in the exchange between Sherlock and Moriarty on the rooftop. I solved this case not by the literal meaning of the words Sherlock and Moriarty spoke to each other, but by their body language and emotional reactions as they spoke, information that would be incomprehensible to a sociopath.

So…yes, there is a heart brain and yes, you can develop it (I do) and no, it doesn’t rely on neo-cortical “reason.” And it solved this case.

And Sherlock would know all this in 2010, when the series begins.

In fact, I don’t believe a modern Sherlock would be fascinated with a female sociopath like Irene Adler at all.  Sherlock would be fascinated with an intuitive genius because she would have information and conclusions that could only be seen or deduced by intuition and social cues that are beyond Sherlock’s comprehension. Can’t you just imagine the fun of an intuitive character (an American woman from California?) using her empathy and intuition to deduce clues that Sherlock cannot comprehend while he looks on with petulant incredulity?

Note to Mr. Gatiss and Mr. Moffat: I’m available for the filming of Season Four Wink

2. Combat PTSD

I think the show did a disservice to veterans when it implied in the first episode that enabling his adrenaline addiction by being caught up in the excitement of the chase would be sufficient to cure Watson of his PTSD. That’s actually the exact opposite of what we know about combat trauma and sends a dangerous message to vets struggling with PTSD as a result of their service to their countries.  Sherlock would be abreast of the latest research on treating combat trauma and would be able to help Watson learn how to authentically release his combat PTSD. I have published this solution on Veteran’s Day, in honor of our veterans.

Resources on overcoming combat trauma:

Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma  by Peter Levine

Odysseus in America: Combat Trauma and the Trial of Homecoming by Jonathan Shay

Free Resources for Veterans, Service Members and Their Families from the Institute of Heartmath

With all due respect, the ideas about trauma, addiction, emotions and (dare I say?) women expressed in this series would be more appropriate voiced by Don Draper and Roger Sterling in the 1950’s era TV series Mad Men.  They simply do not reflect today’s cutting edge thinking or reality.  Let’s all wake up and smell the New Millenium, shall we? Smile
