Información sacada de la página de Amazon sobre este libro:

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, War Horse, Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Hobbit trilogy, Twelve Years a Slave, August: Osage County, The Fifth Estate; Hedda Gabler, After the Dance, Frankenstein; Hawking, To the Ends of the Earth, The Last Enemy, Parade's End, and, of course, Sherlock. For most actors, these stellar cinematic, theatrical, and television events would be the highlights of a lifetime's work. On Benedict Cumberbatch's résumé they are only a few of many entries. Especially since 2010, his performances have garnered a plethora of best actor awards, both in the theatre (Evening Standard Theatre Award, Critics Circle Theatre Award, and Olivier Award), by playing the dual roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature in the National Theatre's Frankenstein, and on television (Broadcasting Press Guild Award, Critics Choice Television Award, Crime Thriller Award, and TV Choice Award), by starring as the titular Holmes in the BBC's Sherlock. Add these and other recent accolades to nearly a decade's nominations and awards (such as the Golden Nymph as best actor in Hawking), and it's easy to see why Benedict Cumberbatch is often hailed as the actor of his generation. Cumberbatch's body of work further includes indie films, radio plays and series, television documentaries, live dramatic readings, multimedia advertisements, and even the occasional stint as a fashion model. He often shares an intriguing perspective on his profession, as evidenced in sometimes controversial interviews. He has become so much in demand that online box offices crash when tickets for his performances go on sale, and, before a Cheltenham Literature Festival Q&A session, fans overwhelmed Twitter when so many responded immediately to a call for questions. Cumberbatch consistently is a top name on lists ranging from sex appeal to global influence. In 2012 he beat David Beckham in the former and U.S. President Barack Obama in the latter. Increasingly, part of Cumberbatch's job involves the role of celebrity. Benedict Cumberbatch is at a pivotal point in his profession, and his career trajectory especially as documented in entertainment media permits a closer examination of just what it means to be a celebrity or star in Britain or the U.S. and how an actor may be perceived very differently in London or Hollywood. This performance biography is an analysis of a man in transition from working actor to multimedia star, as well as the balance between actor and celebrity. It looks at what makes this actor so well suited to play one of popular culture's iconic characters, Sherlock Holmes, and how Sherlock is so well suited to propel Cumberbatch toward greater global fame.

Re: 10 Junio: Libro sobre Benedict: Benedict Cumberbatch, In Transition: An Unauthorised Performance Biography

Mensaje  Mertxines el Lun Abr 29, 2013 11:06 pm

A los de Cumberbatchweb les mandó la escritora una copia del libro antes de que se pusiera a la venta, y ellas han hecho una reseña:

Published by MX Publishing and written by Lynette Porter (a prolific writer and commentator on popular culture with some 14 books under her belt) Benedict Cumberbatch “In Transition” is an unauthorised performance biography. The lovely people at MX Publishing kindly sent us an early copy for review. Now to be frank this isn’t the sort of thing we would usually cover at all at Cumberbatchweb seeing that it is an unauthorised commercial endeavour and not endorsed by Benedict in any way. But as we’ve received a lot of emails about the book we thought a review was in order.

So what’s a “performance biography” all about? The book is essentially an overview of Cumberbatch’s career. After a lengthy introduction the book begins with a brief look at his childhood and education (replete with charming quotes from Wanda Ventham about little Benedict garnered from old newspaper articles), subsequent chapters deal with his early theatrical career, pre-Sherlock TV and film performances (with a focus on Van Gogh: Painted with Words, Inseparable, Wreckers and Third Star), work on radio (focusing on Copenhagen and Cabin Pressure), “Turning Point” performances (Hawking, Sherlock, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Frankenstein and Parade’s End), Hollywood Knocking (about his burgeoning film career) and a chapter on the nature of his “celebrity” (a rather uneasy read).

In many ways it is quite a tricky book to review. The term “biography” rather suggests a light and breezy read, an anecdote packed piece that you can easily polish off on a long train journey or devour in the bath with a good glass of wine to hand. However, In Transition really isn’t that sort of book. Frankly it’s not always the easiest read, the tone is extremely dry, the phrasing sometimes a little awkward. It really isn’t the sort of book you’re going to want to devour in a single sitting.

Huge swathes of the text is made up of quotes from existing materials. Press articles, interviews, podcasts, fan accounts, blog articles, transcripts of Q&A’s, tweets and reviews relating to Benedict Cumberbatch or any of his productions are all extensively quoted from by Porter. These quotes are appropriately attributed throughout the text by the extensive use of footnotes making the book rather akin to reading a lengthy wikipedia article at times. There is no doubt that the book has been meticulously researched - it’s clearly quite the labour of love. But sometimes this tendency to reproduce existing material in the text makes the book difficult to read. For example I’m not quite sure what listing all of Cumberbatch’s credits in the After the Dance programme or splitting out his roles into “historical and modern” quite brings to proceedings.

The fundamental problem of course with so much of the book being based on existing material is that the sort of fan that is likely to purchase this book is also the sort of person who will be able to tell you what each quote is from without looking at the footnotes. Porter hasn’t interviewed anyone specifically for this book. There aren’t any new anecdotes or juicy tidbits to be found in In Transition. Anyone who has ever given my Press, Interviews or Reviews page a cursory glance will be familiar with all the material referred to.

The book is a little arbitrary in splitting Cumberbatch’s career into strictly pre and post Sherlock. Whilst there is no doubt that he went from being someone people half recognised to a household name during the course of the 90 minutes A Study In Pink was on the air he was cast in some of his key roles (War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy for example) purely on the basis of merit - nothing to do with Sherlock.

Porter is very upfront about the fact that she can’t possibly cover all of his roles in any degree of depth (a fair comment as he is much more prolific than people quite appreciate) there are nonetheless some surprising omissions. Whilst all of his roles warrant a mention Stuart: A Life Backwards, The Last Enemy and Small Island (for which he was BAFTA nominated) receive surprisingly short shrift.

The book is by far at its strongest in the chapters dealing with Cumberbatch’s theatrical career. Porter is a fine reviewer and provides detailed lengthy reviews of Cumberbatch’s performances in Hedda Gabler (Almeida), Rhinoceros (Royal Court), After the Dance and Frankenstein (both at the NT). Porter has also transcribed elements of post show Q&As and podcasts relating to Rhinceros, The Arsonists and The City which are interesting reads (sadly she doesn’t cover his “In Conversation at the NT re After the Dance - if you ever get a chance go to the NT Archives and listen, it’s 45 minutes of Benedict talking about his career and was recorded just before his life changed (lots of comments about not imagining that he’d ever appear in anything like NT Live or have a publicist) and it is a complete and total delight.) Porter also transcribes elements of the costume bibles and other rehearsal material for Frankenstein and After the Dance (I’ve looked at the costume bible for
After the Dance and marvelled at the level of preparation Benedict puts into his performances and his attention to detail (like having monogrammed hankies when he was playing David Scott-Fowler - a detail which could never have been observed by the audience)). Whilst all of the material Porter refers to is freely available to be viewed at the NT Archives or the V&A it’s not always terribly practical for fans to attend so to have it transcribed and reproduced in a couple of chapters is enormously helpful.

The book is at its weakest the second it stops discussing his career and starts discussing Cumberbatch’s celebrity. The “celebrity” chapter pretty much encapsulates everything that we would never touch on Cumberbatchweb. I can understand why she included the discussion. A look at Benedict’s career would be incomplete without a discussion of just how much his life has changed in such a short period of time. When I first met him at the stage door of After the Dance shortly after A Study in Pink and The Blind Banker had just aired to ridiculous viewing figures the stage door crowd waiting for him that evening consisted of an autograph dealer seriously pushing his luck with 6 10 x 8’s of Benedict as Sherlock that he wanted signing, a middle aged lady who had quite the thing for him following The Last Enemy and my friend and I. Cumberbatch was utterly baffled that anyone was waiting for him and when I mentioned the TCA press tour for Sherlock (he’d flown home the previous day) he was completely bewildered at the prospect that there were people on-line paying attention to anything he did.

Fast forward three years and his arrival at North Gower Street to film Sherlock was punctuated by ear piercing screams by the several hundred fans who were lining the opposite street to watch. It was full on rock & roll Beatlemania. He has become the sort of A List celeb that girls scream for & faint over - his every public appearance recorded in photographic form either by the ever present paps or the public sneakily taking pics on their phones. So I can understand why Porter included the chapter but I found it an uncomfortable read. It re-hashes the exceptionally tired posh-bashing debate (itself fuelled by link bait outlets), scrutinises his Parade’s End press for references to a girlfriend and is generally quite presumptuous with speculation on whether he “gets” fandom (fans generally don’t come out very well in the book with an emphasis on negative fan encounters especially in the Frankenstein chapter which goes so far as to have Cumberbatch purportedly praising someone who didn’t approach him as “a true fan”). The chapter also contains Sherlock series 3 spoilers for those avoiding such things. Whilst I understand the reasoning behind the inclusion of the chapter I think it would have been a stronger book without it.

For anyone completely new to Benedict Cumberbatch’s career or for the completist fan In Transition will no doubt be an enormously helpful reference guide to his work. For those very familiar with his career it’s an interesting but inessential read.

Benedict Cumberbatch In Transition is out on 10 June & can be ordered from Amazon. It costs £11.69
